As Covid, more or less, recedes in its every day impact, people are socializing. All over the place. This makes me happy–as an utter extrovert I love get togethers. I’ve so missed gatherings and parties. I was recently at a soiree in my building and we started talking about great parties we’d attended. I confess, when asked what the best party I’d ever been to, I couldn’t come up with an answer.

However, now that I’ve thought about it, I’d say the best party I ever attended was my husband’s 60th birthday party. It had everything–surprise, great guests, a stellar musical performance, and superb libations. We still reminisce about that night.

How about you? What’s the funnest party you’ve ever attended? Why?

  1. My brother and his crew have the best celebrations. There is always lots of impromptu music since he’s a drummer and most of his friends and family are musicians or singers. They are also family of extroverts, like me, so it’s always a raucous, happy time.

Case in point: this weekend we’re in Asheville for the wedding of my nephew. We attended the rehearsal dinner last night and had a blast. My brother and his sons tend to draw people to them and they stay around for life. Last night I caught up with Brian, someone my brother met in middle school and who has been close to my family for over 50 years. They played in a band together for much of their teen years. Also at the rehearsal dinner were friends of my nephew and his fiancee, who met in college over 10 years ago, from grade school, high school, college and NYC, where they now live. It was so much fun, and the fashions (and hairstyles) on display were fabulous!

My husband and his family (and my kids) are mostly introverts, and I love them dearly when we all get together. Lots of deep discussion about life, religion and science. But every once in a while I really need to bust loose, be loud, hug everyone, and meet lots of new people. I can’t wait for the wedding tonight (there will be dancing!), and then the family get together on Saturday.

  2. I still remember fondly the keg parties in the woods my brother threw back in the early 80s. There would be a hundred or more people just having a good time. A few years later, once he got out of the Navy and he got into brewing beer, he had some great beer tasting parties. He would make his own labels for the bottles and came up with creative names for the different types of beer. We would vote for the best. My fav was his Haystacks Stout. He also honored a family friend by creating a beer for her named St. Suzie Girl. He is the social butterfly of the family and still throws good parties at his retirement village. Unfortunately, I’m a thousand miles away so I don’t get to attend many any more.

My sister and her partner throw great parties too. She likes themes so we’ve had a pirate party with swashbuckling and pirate music, an End of the World party to celebrate the end of the Mayan calendar where we annointed a post apocalyptic king, and a few others.

I’m not much of a partier these days. I’m a total introvert and don’t drink much any more. My idea of fun these days is dinner and a movie, with the odd play, dance, or festival.
