Confession: I’ve never watched an episode of Survivor which is uncool because my nephew by marriage Erik Reichenbach has been on the show twice. Erik is one of the loveliest men I know so this makes me feel a bit… guilty.Erik has now settled down into everyday life and is, among other things, doing something he calls Outsider Interviews. He asked me if I’d be up for chatting about romance and, duh, I said yes.
The interview is long, yes–26 freaking minutes–but is enlivened by Erik’s art which is fantabulous. Erik’s show looks at how an outsider make sense of something unfamiliar and, well, I gave him my perspective on romance. In doing so, I recommend books by Joanna Bourne, Kristan Higgins, and Loreth Anne White.
Erik asked me to suggest romances for someone who’s never read romance. I picked six:
Famous by Jenny Holiday (for those who love Taylor Swift, modern life, and the ways in which we are all trying to make it work). In our DIK review we wrote:
This is a guest post from author Jill Sorenson. Her first motorcycle club romance Riding Dirty comes out on October 1st. Jill is giving away a copy of Riding Dirty to one lucky AAR reader. (Thanks, Jill!) Just enter a comment below.
Perennial contemporary romance favorite Jill Shalvis has a new book out this week. It’s called Sweet Little Lies and it’s her first release with Avon Books as well as the first edited by well-known editor May Chen (she has edited Julie Anne Long, Sherry Thomas, Lorraine Heath, and others). Sweet Little Lies is book one in Jill’s new Heartbreaker Bay series. I’ve read…
This week Mary Ann Rivers released her first published work, a moving novella entitled The Story Guy. Goodreads readers give it a 4.5. I thought it was almost perfect. I know Mary Ann through twitter (every Tuesday night we watch Buffy and Tweet madly at #buffyclub). I also follow her at wonkomance.com. (Read her recent…
The best part of RWA for me is talking with authors. This year, I was able to chat with quite a few of them and I’ll be sharing those interviews over the next few weeks. (I asked them all the same set of questions–I thought it would be fun to compare the answers!) First up: The…
Earlier this month I was chided on Twitter for saying this: I’m 70% through A Bollywood Bride by @Sonali_Dev. I now feel bereft that I’ve never been to an Indian wedding. Or worn a sari. The chider is a woman and author whose opinion I respect. She asked me why I would ever have had an…
I enjoyed reading in 2017. I read widely and much of what I read was good. So that’s a win. Of the couple hundred books I read last year, these are the ones, in no particular order, that stood out. Edge of Power by Megan Crane. (You can read Em’s B+ review here.) Edge of Obsession,…

That was great Dabney! I loved the illustrations as you were talking, your nephew is very talented! And Famous is a favorite for me too.
And this one made me — finally! — buy and read Firestorm by Rachel Grant. And, yes, it is quite good: well researched, great plot and fantastic romance. Thanks, Dabney. 🙂
