the ask@AAR: What’s your preferred way to read?
Here’s a somewhat shocking confession: I haven’t read an actual book in over a year. And I don’t want to. Unless I can read a book on the Kindle app on my iPad, I’m just not interested.

My husband adores stand up comedy. I do not. My siblings all rave about Curb Your Enthusiasm. I think it’s mean and unfunny. Others in my book club–the less fun one–cracked up over Where’d You Go, Bernadette. I found everyone in it profoundly unpleasant. Clearly, humor is in the funny bone of the beholder. I…

Recently, seeking joy, I re-read The Hating Game which made me, well, happy. Josh and Lucy’s battle for superiority is gleeful and witty and their love story outstanding. (That kiss in the elevator gets me every time.) Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes–I like it much better than friends to lovers which…
I am reading a book in which the man nasty talks the whole damn time he and his honey are 1) talking about having sex, 2) having sex, or 3) talking about when they had sex. It’s not working for me. For me, when I am reading a love scene, talk of spurting, and ball…
We’ve talked about having an AAR book club for what feels like forever and, you know what, it’s time. I made a few executive decisions so we could get started. The book had to be fun, a DIK at AAR, and cheap. So, using those criteria, I came up with three choices.
It’s been almost two years since we published our last Top 100 Romances list. This list, which AAR has done every five years or so, is a reader generated list–the last list was picked by readers who cast over 5000 votes. We left the Top 100 list unranked although we did rank the top ten….
Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. (from The Princess Bride)
I hate the term “guilty pleasure.” (“A guilty pleasure is something that we enjoy, but we know we’re either not supposed to like, or that liking it says something negative about us,” said Sami Schalk, an assistant professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.) I believe that joy is joy and…
Today, when a friend on Facebook pointed out that you can’t have a pandemic without panic, I was practicing deep breathing. (I’d just read the New York Times.) I had, like so many, been freaking out. But then I started to read about the 1918 flu and how much better off we are facing this…
