It’s summertime and the watching is… what?

It used to be that there was nothing on in the summer. Streaming has changed all that. (Although, as far as I’m concerned, there are no interesting sports on once basketball is done….)

I’m so excited for the final season of Endeavour. (Those on the other side of the pond who’ve already seen it, I’m jealous and do not spoil a thing, please!) I’m also dying to watch the third and final season of Happy Valley–there will be six episodes, four have already aired. I’m waiting for them all to drop before I binge! And given my giant crush on Timothy Olyphant and my deep deep love for Justified, I will be glued to the screen when Justified: City Primeval drops on July 18th. I love me some Idris and the production team is one I trust, so I’m also going to watch Hijack when in comes out at the end of this month. Lastly, I’m very much looking forward to the third season of Only Murders in the Building. Meryl Streep, complete with hair right out of The Sound of Music, joins the already excellent cast!

Movie wise, I’m sure we’ll see the penultimate Mission Impossible film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, when it comes out next month. Those movies are mindlessly entertaining in a way that feels perfect for a hot summer night. I’m also pumped for Oppenheimer, the latest Christopher Nolan film which stars Cillian Murphy. I’m hoping Red, White, and Royal Blue is as good as the book.

How about you? What are you looking forward to watching this summer?

  1. I’m looking forward to seeing Wes Anderson’s latest movie, “Asteroid City”. One of my daughters is a huge Wes Anderson fan, and, ever since we sat through a hour of technical difficulties at a movie theater to watch “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, seeing his movies together is a mother-daughter bonding experience for us.

    1. He is usually not for me–I do love Rushmore–and this one sounds super meta. That said, mother daughter bonding experiences are the best!

  2. I am doubtful anything will reach the heights of The Night Agent (with a nice little romance in it) or The Diplomat, but I am looking forward to Idris in Hijack, and, now that I have heard about it, Justified City Primeval (Justified is the only TV show I have properly binged, watching a DVD a day rather than my usual episode a day).

    1. I really enjoyed the The Night Agent. We have The Diplomat on our list. We are currently watching The Shield which I am ambivalent about.

      1. I recommend those who enjoy The Night Agent try the first season of Condor which lives in the same vicinity but is harder edged.

The Diplomat really is excellent, with some killer one liners.

        1. I was such a huge Americans fan and Rufus Sewell is always superb. We will definitely watch it soon!

  3. It’s not till October so doesn’t really fit into the list of summertime things to watch, but I’m excited to see season 3 of Lupin. Omar Sy is great in the lead and Paris should get billing above the title as it is such a lovely backdrop for the story – not quite as good as a visit in person, but since that’s not going to happen this year I’ll settle for seeing it onscreen.

  4. Does late Spring count?
Endeavor Season 9! (Final Season) on Masterpiece …
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

    Greta Gerwig’s Barbie
    Asteroid City
    Biosphere

The fall lineup looks much more compelling!
    Dune Part II
    Rebel Moon
    Squid Game: The Challenge
    Bridgerton S3????
    Wish (Disney)
    Migration (Illumination)

  5. I don’t watch tv/streaming shows. The last one I watched was Bridgerton 2 last year. I will probably watch Lupin season 3 since I liked seasons 1&2.

What I really want to see is Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. It is coming out in October.

    1. I’m reading Killers of the Flower Moon right now. I didn’t know it was being made into a movie and it has lots of stars like DiCaprio and DeNiro. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I’m really looking forward to Heartstopper season 2 on Netflix. S1 was an adorable British M/M schoolboy romance and I loved it. Highly recommend!

I’m also looking forward to season 3 of Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. I love the chemistry of the leads Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez and this season will have Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd!

Another show is season 2 of The Afterparty on Apple. It’s a murder mystery show where each episode is done in the viewpoint of a different character and in a different style, such as noir or comic or musical. Has a good amount of humor in it too.

Lastly, I hope the Red, White & Royal Blue movie is worthy of the book, one of my favorite romance novels of the past few years.

      1. Yes, S1 felt complete and I thought the show might be a one-off. From what I hear, S2 will have the same detective but a new mystery and the episodes will include some new visual style/genres.

  7. No one wants to see the Barbie movie? (I won’t see it in a theater, but I’ll watch it when it streams.)

I’m very bummed that Ted Lasso and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have ended. I have not found a good substitute for them, unfortunately.

    1. I will see the new Barbie movie but probably not until it streams.

And yes, good, reasonably deep comedy is hard to find!

    2. I will absolutely be seeing Barbie – and making a point of seeing it in our local, family-owned theater. I thought Gerwig’s remake of Little Women was fabulous and I can’t wait to see what she has done with Barbie (and Ken).

BTW – I went to a theater showing of The Wizard of Oz last month and realized it was probably the first time I’d ever seen the movie that way. (I’m 63 and have seen the movie many, many times.) I was amazed at how different the film felt on a truly large screen.

And FWIW – our local theater chain is advertising on-screen captioned seatings for several big releases this summer: Asteroid City, Oppenheimer, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible to name just a few. I can’t help but think captions will benefit a lot of people who enjoy movies in theaters. I know my 83-year-old mom has given up going to theaters because needs captions. I plan to give it a whirl this weekend with Asteroid City. I’ve seen the trailer multiple times in recent weeks and there are still lines I’ve not heard or understood.

      1. Captions are GREAT. My mom would go to the movies again if all theaters had that option.

I took my husband, several years ago, to see The Sound of Music on the big screen. He’d never seen it! I have probably seen it at least 15 times in my life. It did indeed, to your point, feel wonderfully different!
